COOL Teaching Artists (TAs) are passionate artists and educators with deep content expertise in their artform and in integrating their artform with academic curriculum.  They are committed to awakening the creativity and learning potential in all students and see the arts as a catalyst for deeper learning.  In COOL Schools programs, COOL TAs and classroom teachers partner to integrate the arts into the academic curriculum.  The TA brings a wealth of arts resources and the teacher provides their expertise in the curriculum.  Together, they create arts-integrated experiences to deepen students’ learning in both the arts and an academic subject area.  While each program is designed specifically to meet the needs of the students involved, all COOL programs focus on the following four main goals, which are articulated during the planning meeting:

Students will increase artistic skills in a particular art form
Students will deepen understanding of a given academic subject area
Students will increase social or non-cognitive skills
Teachers will heighten their proficiency with arts integration

The TA also develops a curriculum map draft and shares it with their partner teacher for feedback.  After the initial planning process, the TA visits each partner classroom once per week to collaboratively teach the lesson with the teacher for 12 sessions (some of our programs are shorter or longer).

Students may include those with learning, emotional/behavioral, physical, or developmental disabilities.  Classes take place during the school day with classroom teachers; each class session is between 30 – 60 minutes long.  The teaching artist generally works with 3-4 classes per program day, which usually takes place once a week for 12 weeks.  The teaching artist position is a part-time and temporary contract position that offers competitive rates.
