This month we are excited to feature artist Dominic Killiany! Dominic is a 23 year old young man with autism whose interpretation of the world reflects his knowledge of order, balance and symmetry with a touch of abstract expressionism in a symphony of color. Dominic’s exhibit “What I See” was featured as the opening exhibit for the newly renovated Open Door Gallery at the Worcester Art Museum in 2018, and after that in our Open Door Gallery in Boston.
Open Door Arts has continued supporting Dominic with additional opportunities since his exhibits in our galleries. In 2019 we connected Dominic with the Cambridge Arts Council as they were looking for artwork for their new Universal Design Playground. We’re thrilled that Dominic’s work was selected and that 10 digifuse images of his colorful and playful artwork will be permanently displayed in the playground starting in the spring!
Over the past year, Dominic has been busy! He received the Award of Excellence for the Kennedy Center’s 2021 Emerging Young Artists Competition. The competition is for artists with disabilities ages 18-25 and is very competitive. His painting, “Purple Lights of the City,” will be featured in the exhibit at the Kennedy Center from January 22-25, 2022 before traveling throughout the country for a year.
Dominic is also currently collaborating with ArtPiece Puzzles, a group of artists with disabilities who reproduce pieces of art as puzzles. Dominic’s piece “Denali Park, Alaska” will be released as a puzzle in 2022.
We love supporting Dominic and his work, and are honored to be a small part of his journey as an artist. Be sure to stay in touch with Dominic’s work and future endeavors by visiting his website and following him on social media!
